Preparing communities means protecting lives, communities and local economies.

El Niño warms Pacific waters, changing rainfall and temperatures. Climate change can intensify its impacts, making preparedness increasingly urgent.

How El Niño arrives

What happens in the ocean during El Niño?

Step 1 / 4
strong trade windsweak trade windscold water risesAsia and OceaniaPeru and Ecuadorwarm waterheavy rain
  1. 01

    A normal year

Trade winds blow east to west and push warm water toward Asia. Off Peru, cold nutrient-rich water rises: the coast stays dry and anchovy thrive.

  2. 02

    The winds weaken

The trade winds lose strength and stop pushing warm water west. It is the first signal ENFEN and NOAA watch for.

  3. 03

    The sea warms off Peru

Warm water spreads to our coast. In septiembre 2026 it reached +4.7 °C above normal off Peru, the highest monthly value since 1982.

  4. 04

    The rains arrive

A warmer sea evaporates more water and clouds unload over the northern and central coast: floods, mudslides and then dengue. Preparing ahead is what changes the ending.

Our story

How Climática began

Climática was born from an experience thousands of Peruvian families know well. During the 2017 coastal El Niño, Kelly's family home in Trujillo flooded and a relative had to be rescued; in Lima, rainwater pooled on the roof and seeped into the family business. It left one conviction: with timely information and a plan, the damage can be far smaller.

Kelly and Alejandra met in youth environmental activism. Kelly came from climate policy and Alejandra from energy and youth networks for the energy transition; both brought the voice of Peruvian youth to the UN climate conferences.

They saw the same gap: official forecasts from ENFEN and SENAMHI come out months ahead, yet families and small businesses find out when the water is already at the door. Climática exists to turn that information into simple decisions: what the forecast means where you live, what to do today and what it could cost your business.
